Widow Remarriage

| |

What is the success rate of remarried widows. Are widows remarrying in Indian context?

What are the problems of a widow remarriage or remarrying a widow.

As an individual 'You', you have seen some widows rarely in your relative, friends, and known circle. You can count that how many widows in your circle. Correct?

Well, out of the total widows in your sphere, how many has got remarried? Could you guess it? Just think around your relatives, friends, neighbors, and known ones. Mostly None.

In my sphere, I hardly see a remarried widow. Widows do not remarry in Indian traditional context mostly. This may be subjective to my sphere. I may be wrong to your sphere or context. By and large, there are less number of widows who marry again.

Second marriage is different from remarriage. Second marriage is a term, is generally applied to Divorcees getting married second term and Male marring second wife provided he keeps his first wife. I assume in such way.

Success rate of widow remarriage is insignificant because it is not happening often.

You may thing I am wrong. Here is my question, How many marriages have you attended where widow is a Bride? Hardly I attended only one remarriage of a widow, in my life time so far.

But all the widower(male), I see my sphere have remarried. :) Remarriage after spouse death is 100% to widower, but less than 1% or none to widows.

First, middle aged widow may be hesitating for remarriage if she has children. The problem here is that children may not accept the new father. OR the new husband want his widowed-wife to give special care to 'his' children. This would be a serious obstacle.

Second is the social status of a widow. Widow has a sympathy, recognition from society. If a widow remarry again, she has to loose all the special care given by the environment. Also, people look differently at widow who marry again or a remarried widow may assume that people look at her differently. The state of widow's children will be difficult if her new husband unintentionally put down his predecessor's kids.

Property or legal heirs issue will raise if widow or her husband has wealth. Whose children will follow the property. If both are from equally rich family, this issue may raise.

How society is looking at a widow, will change. How children are looking at their widowed mother, will change. How do you view yourself as a widow, will change. The change may be positive or negative. But anticipating and accepting the change is very important for increasing widow remarriage.

The problems of a Man who marry a widow is not discussed always.
This might be beyond the scope as on date.

When a widow above 18 years seeks to remarry, her own consent is sufficient to constitute a lawful and valid marriage. I read some on http://www.lawisgreek.com/widow-remarriage-under-hindu-laws/
